Nike x Vitra: Form Follows Motion

With »Nike: Form Follows Motion«, the Vitra Design Museum presents the first museum exhibition on the world's largest sports brand, Nike.

The exhibition traces Nike’s development from a small start-up to a global phenomenon and focuses on the brand’s design history, from the first experiments in the 1960s to the introduction of the »Swoosh« logo and the Air sole to modern developments such as sustainable materials.

Numerous objects from the Nike archive, including prototypes of the Waffle Trainer and the Air Force 1, as well as design studies and historical photographs, provide insights into the brand’s innovative power. The exhibition also focuses on Nike’s collaborations with legends such as Michael Jordan and Serena Williams, who have been instrumental in the development of the brand, as well as Nike’s ever-increasing role in pop culture.

The exhibition is divided into four sections that tell the story of Nike design from its beginnings to the present day. From the first steps in the 1960s, to the international breakthrough of the Air sole in the 1980s, to current innovations and sustainable materials. Nike’s collaborations with designers such as Virgil Abloh and its links with subcultures are also presented.
